VAT Return Filing

Accurate VAT Returns, Filed On Time

A VAT return looks routine until a figure is in the wrong box, a zero-rated supply is treated as standard, or input VAT is over-claimed. Each of those invites an FTA query — and a late return is penalised regardless of the amount.

Registered businesses file their VAT return on Form VAT201 through EmaraTax, within 28 days of the end of each tax period. Most file quarterly; larger businesses, generally those above AED 150 million in annual turnover, file monthly.

The return reports your output VAT (what you charged customers) against your input VAT (what you paid on business costs) — and the difference is what you pay to, or reclaim from, the FTA. Getting the classification and the input recovery right is where accuracy matters: over-claim and you risk a review; under-claim and you leave money behind.

SKM International prepares and files each return for you: reconciling your records, applying the correct VAT treatment, completing VAT201 and submitting it on EmaraTax before the deadline. You get a return that is accurate, on time, and ready to stand behind if the FTA ever asks.

What We Handle

Your VAT Returns, Done For You

From the raw records to a submitted return — we take the whole cycle.

Records Reconciliation
We reconcile your sales, purchases and accounting records so the figures going into the return are accurate and supportable — not a best guess at quarter-end.
Correct VAT Treatment
Standard, zero-rated or exempt; reverse charge on imports; blocked input VAT — we apply the right treatment to each transaction so the return holds up.
Output vs Input VAT
We calculate output VAT on your sales against recoverable input VAT on your costs, so you pay or reclaim exactly the right amount for the period.
VAT201 Preparation & Filing
We complete Form VAT201 and submit it on EmaraTax within the 28-day deadline — and confirm the filing back to you, with the workings retained.
Deadline Tracking
We track your filing cycle and chase the records in good time, so a return is never left to the last day — and the late-filing penalty never arises.
Refunds & Corrections
Where a return shows a refundable position, we handle the refund request; where a past return was wrong, we put it right through a voluntary disclosure.

FAQ

VAT Return Filing — Common Questions

How often do I file VAT returns?

Most businesses file VAT returns quarterly, within 28 days of the end of each tax period. Larger businesses, generally those with annual turnover above AED 150 million, file monthly. Your filing cycle is set by the FTA. We track your specific deadlines and file each return on time through EmaraTax.

What form is used to file a VAT return?

VAT returns are filed on Form VAT201 through the FTA's EmaraTax portal. The form reports your output VAT, input VAT and the net amount payable or refundable. We prepare and submit it for you, keeping the supporting workings so the figures can be backed up if the FTA raises a query.

Do I have to file if I had no sales?

Yes. A nil return still has to be filed by the deadline. The late-filing penalty applies regardless of whether any VAT is due, so even a period with no sales or no VAT payable must be reported on time. We file your nil returns just as we do any other, so nothing is missed.

What happens if I file a VAT return late?

Late filing attracts an automatic penalty that applies even if no VAT is owed, and any unpaid VAT attracts a separate late-payment penalty on top. The amounts are set out on our Tax Penalties page. If you are already late, the priority is to file immediately — we can do that for you to stop the penalty building.

Can I get a refund through my VAT return?

Yes. If your input VAT for the period exceeds your output VAT, the return shows a refundable amount, and you can request a refund rather than carrying it forward. We handle the refund request as part of filing — see our VAT Refund page for how the process and the new time limits work.

Can SKM file my returns every period?

Yes — that is how most clients work with us. We handle every return on an ongoing basis: collecting the records, preparing the figures, filing VAT201 on time and confirming it back to you each period. You never have to think about the deadline, and your VAT stays clean year-round.
